Chapter 22, Problem 3WIO
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The cause for the stoppage of growth of one out of the two plants grown on identical soil and providing them water for the same amount at the same time interval.

Concept introduction:

Growth is a process in which an organism increases in shape, size and in overall body structure and function and length. Growth in plants is a feature that continues for a very long time. It occurs at a very rapid rate and that is the reason for most of the plants being tall. The growth of a plant depends on many factors like the sunlight, nutrients, genetic factors, physiological conditions like temperature of the surrounding, pH (potential of hydrogen) and some others.

Identify each activity as an observation, a hypothesis, an experiment, or a conclusion. (a)The leaves of the pea plants that received too much water turned yellow.Observation   (b)  Jill decided that 5 hours of indirect sunlight gave optimum growth .   (c)  Jack gave the pea plants a controlled amount of water each day.   (d)  Jill thinks that too little sunlight will affect plant growth.
Scenario: I planted a monggo seed and put red cellophane over one, and blue cellophane on the other in order to observe the plant growth. Question: a. How does the red color affect the seedlings of plants in terms of growth? b. How does the blue color affects the seedlings of plant in terms of growth?
Imagine an experiment where I am testing the effects of salt on the growth of corn plants. I set up several treatments where some plants get no salt, some are watered with a 0.05% salt solution, and some are watered with a 0.1% salt solution.  I use the same species of plants, the same soil, and the same total amounts of water in my experiment.  Every other day I record the height of the plants in cm.  What is the independent variable in my experiment?   What is the dependent variable in my experiment?   What is the control treatment in my experiment?   What are three controlled variables in my experiment?
