Laxatives are substances that increase bowel movement and loosen the stool. They are used to treat constipation. Laxatives are of many types and they work through different mechanisms. Some increase the fibrous content of the stool for easy passage, some softens them. Some laxatives work by increasing the water content in the feces so that it can easily pass through.
