Question
Chapter 2.2, Problem 4EIQ
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Neurons synthesize neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine, and they contain an enzyme called monoamine oxidase (MAO). They help to break down the transmitters into inactive chemicals, thereby avoiding transmitter to become harmful levels. The psychiatrists discovered MAO inhibitors were the first antidepressant drugs. Depression occurs because of the low levels of neurotransmitters, namely dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. They are collectively called monoamines. MAO inhibitors allow these neurotransmitters to stay in the brain to elevate the mood by brain cell communication.
