In 1993, the U.S. government instituted a requirement that all room air conditioners sold in the United States must have an energy efficiency ratio (EER) of 10 or higher. The EER is defined as the ratio of the cooling capacity of the air conditioner, measured in British thermal units per hour, or Btu/h, to its electrical power requirement in watts. (a) Convert the EER of 10.0 to dimensionless form, using the conversion 1 Btu = 1 055 J. (b) What is the appropriate name for this dimensionless quantity? (c) In the 1970s, it was common to find room air conditioners with EERs of 5 or lower. State how the operating costs compare for 10 000-Btu/h air conditioners with EERs of 5.00 and 10.0. Assume each air conditioner operates for 1 500 h during the summer in a city where electricity costs 17.0¢ per kWh.

- The average life expectancy in Japan is 81 years. What is this time in SI units?arrow_forwardWhen a electrical appliances whose power usage is X watts is run for Y seconds it uses X×Y joules of energy. The energy unit used by electrical utilities in their monthly bills is the kilowatt-hour (kwh, that is, 1 kilowatts used for 1 hour) how many joules are there in a kilowatt hour? If electricity cost per $0.09 per kilowatt hour, how much does it cost per megajoule?arrow_forwardFinal Answer must be a decimal or whole numbers only!!!arrow_forward

- Sales delay is the elapsed time between the manufacture of a product and its sale. According an article it is quite common for investigators to model sales delay using a lognormal distribution. For a particular product, the cited article proposes this distribution with parameter values μ = 2.09 and ² = 0.07 (here the unit for delay is months). LUSE SALT (a) What are the variance and standard deviation of delay time? (Round your answers to two decimal places.) months² months variance standard deviation (b) What is the probability that delay time exceeds 12 months? (Round your answer to four decimal places.) (c) What is the probability that delay time is within one standard deviation of its mean value? (Round your answer to four decimal places.)arrow_forwardWhich of the following statements uses exact numbers? (a) 1 ft = 12 in.(b) 1 cal = 4.184 J(c) The height of Mt.
