Introduction:
The heart is innervated by the autonomic nervous system. This innervation consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic components, which are collectively known as the cardiac plexus. The innervations by autonomic centers in the brainstem do not initiate a heartbeat. It can increase or decrease the rate of the heartbeat.
