To analyze: The condition of the patient J, whose kidney has been damaged and this caused the proteins to be removed from the blood. The reason for the effect on the osmotic pressure of the blood in capillaries, compared with that of the surrounding interstitial fluid and the reason for the development of the swelling in Juan’s arms and legs.
Introduction:
The infection and damage to the kidneys of the patient has caused the removal of the plasma proteins from the blood. The movement of the ions, metabolites and nutrients takes place from the tubules to the interstitial fluid across the aquaporin channels in the membrane. The net effect of the force developed due to the blood pressure and the osmotic pressure causes the movement of the ions and metabolites inside the interstitial fluid. This causes the development of the swelling in the arms and legs, due to the accumulation of the plasma proteins in the blood after its removal from the kidney cells.

- Why is excretion important in order to achieve osmotic balance?arrow_forwardExplain how the heart, kidneys, and several glands all work together to cause the excretion of more sodium ions in the urine when a person has eaten salty food?arrow_forwardA pt was born with a rare genetic disorder in which the proximal tubules of her nephrons express half the number of aquaporins as normal. What will result? A. reduced reabsorption of water, although as much reabsorption of Na+ as is typical? b. reduced reabsorption of water, Na+ and glucose in the proximal tubules? c. Reduced reabsorption of both water and Na+ in equal proportions? D. Reduced reabsorption of all materials in the proximal tubules.arrow_forward
- Why are most plasma proteins the albumins and globulin excluded from the filtrate in a healthy kidney?arrow_forwardthe process that initiates urine formation in most types of vertebrates is ultrafiltration of fluid from the blood plasma into kidney tubules under the force of blood pressure. What properties of the blood plasma in the urine-forming structures of the kidney are likely to affect the rate of ultrafiltration into the kidney tubules? Why is failure of urine production a potential side effect of heart disease?arrow_forwardThe kidneys are responsible for removing excess H+ ions from the blood. If the kidneys fail, what will happen toarrow_forward
- Which of these is not a function of the kidneys? A) The kidneys regulate the plasma volume B) The kidneys help to regulate blood pressure C) The kidneys help control the rate of red blood cell production D) The kidneys deactivate vitamin D and stimulate the activity of osteoclastsarrow_forwardA patient with liver disease is unable to synthesize plasma proteins. What happens to the colloid osmotic pressure of his blood? -increases,decreases,does not change?arrow_forwardWhat is meant by the term osmoregulation?arrow_forward
- Part A Why is control over blood [Ca2+] and [Red Blood Cell] crucial? Choose one hormone involved in either of these homeostatic systems that regulate the concentration of these ions/cells and describe how it functions in homeostasis. Remember to include the name of the gland that secretes it. Part B Choose one molecule that is reabsorbed by the nephron and describe the process by which it is reabsorbed.arrow_forwardThe “Renal Vein” cup contains now contains “clean” blood. After reabsorption has occurred, what SEVEN substances are present in the “clean” blood in the renal vein?arrow_forwardFred was diagnosed 6 months ago with liver cancer. His liver is no longer able to make the necessary amount of proteins needed by the body. What effect, if any, would this have on the net glomerular filtration rate? (Hint, decide which of the 3 forces contributing to the net filtration rate is affected. Then adjust numbers in the equation to determine if there is an increase, decrease, or no change to the net filtration rate). Group of answer choices A) Blood colloid osmotic pressure would be decreased, increasing the net glomerular filtration rate. B) Blood colloid osmotic pressure would be decreased, decreasing the net glomerular filtration rate. C) Capsular hydrostatic pressure would be decreased, increasing the net glomerular filtration rate. D) Capsular hydrostatic pressure would be decreased, decreasing the net glomerular filtration rate. E) There would be no effect on the net glomerular filtration rate.arrow_forward
