Chapter 23, Problem 1AAATB
Summary Introduction
To write:
Whether the child gets affected by zika infection, if the mother was infected in her adolescence.
Introduction:
In 1947, the first zika virus was identified in the East African forest of Uganda. The Aedes species of mosquito hosts the zika virus. Symptoms of zika infection aremild fever, joint pain, pink eye, and rash. In case of pregnant women, if the mother gets infected in the first 3 months of her pregnancy then, her baby has high possibility of several disabilities. The baby may have a small head, which causes genetic disorders, impaired vision, hearing as well as swallowing difficulty. We don’t have a vaccine or medication to treat zika infection.

- The vertical transmission of certain communicable diseases from mother-to-child during pregnancy and birth is of great concern to public health practitioners because it represents a critical period for intervention. If practitioners can determine at birth whether the disease has been transmitted from mother-to-child, they can act immediately to provide the child with treatment. Syphilis is a disease with high risk for vertical transmission from mother-to-child. If a child becomes infected and is not treated, there can be negative health outcome such as blindness, deafness, and neurological damage. Inspired by the advent of rapid HIV tests that provide quick results and are minimally invasive, suppose that researchers have been working to develop a similar test that can be used for syphilis. After obtaining appropriate institutional approval and patient consent, the researchers test their rapid syphilis test at several birthing hospitals and compare it to the gold standard laboratory…arrow_forwardThe vertical transmission of certain communicable diseases from mother-to-child during pregnancy and birth is of great concern to public health practitioners because it represents a critical period for intervention.
