To determine:
If Andrea should take medicine to suppress her acute, productive cough.
Introduction:
The conducting portion of respiratory system is lined by respiratory mucosa. The respiratory mucosa comprises a layer of epithelium along with the layer of areolar tissue (lamina propria).
The upper respiratory passageway is lined by pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium and contains numerous mucous cells that produce mucus.
The mucous entraps the dust particles and pathogens that enter with inhaled air and the cilia functions to propel the mucous entrapped pathogen outside the body through coughing reflex, thereby providing immunity.
