Summary Introduction

To determine: The meristem and its composition.

Introduction: The process of plant embryogenesis takes place after the fertilization of an ovule to produce a completely developed plant embryo. It establishes the apical-basal axis of the plant with a root apical meristem at one end and a shoot apical meristem at the other end.

Explanation of Solution

Meristem: Most of the plant development takes place after the process of embryogenesis through the activity of meristems. With the seed germination, the apical, shoot, and root meristems of the embryo produce cells that give rise to the stems, roots, leaves, and flowers of the plant.

Composition of meristem: The meristem is formed of totipotent cell populations or embryonic regions that have the potential to divide long after the process of embryogenesis. The meristem is maintained as a continuous source of new cells by the cells called initials. Initials divide in such a way that one of the sister cells develops as a body cell or derivative, while the other cell remains in the meristem.
