Concept explainers
Solar sail. NASA is doing research on the concept of solar sailing. A solar sailing craft uses a large, low-mass sail and the energy and momentum of sunlight for propulsion, (a) Should the sail be absorptive or reflective? Why? (b) The total power output of the sun is 3.9 × 1026 W. How large a sail is necessary to propel a 10,000 kg spacecraft against the gravitational force of the sun? Express your result in square kilometers, (c) Explain why your answer to part (b) is independent of the distance from the sun.

(a) To what accuracy in meters can the distance to the Moon be determined, If this time can be measured to 0.100 ns? (b) What percent accuracy is this, given the average distance to the Moon is 384,480 kin?arrow_forwardBrewster plates are used in laser cavities to polarize the light with the smallest amount of power loss possible (see figure). Suppose the laser cavity is filled with air (n = 1) and the Brewster's plate is made of glass (ng = 1.47). (a) What is the angle the normal to the plate must make with respect to the laser beam, θB, if the polarization of the reflected light is maximized? Answer in radians. (b) If instead this were a dye laser, whose cavity is filled with a liquid solution with ns = 1.3. What is the angle, θB, in radians?arrow_forwardLunar astronauts placed a reflector on the Moon’s surface, off which a laser beam is periodically reflected. - A pulsed laser used for evaporation ("ablation") in materials science has a total energy of 0.50 J in a pulse of ultraviolet light that is 2.0 X 108 s long. The beam is 2.0 mm in diame- ter. What is the electric field ampli- tude during the pulse?arrow_forwardThe Poynting vector describes a flow of energy whenever electric and magnetic fields are present. Consider a long cylindrical wire of radius r with a current I in the wire, with resistance R and voltage V. From the expressions for the electric field along the wire and the magnetic field around the wire, obtain the magnitude and direction of the Poynting vector at the surface. Show that it accounts for an energy flow into the wire from the fields around it that accounts for the Ohmic heating of the wire.arrow_forward(a) What is the minimum angular spread of a 633-nm wavelength He-Ne laser beam that is originally 1.00 mm in diameter?
