Chapter 23, Problem 6TOF
Summary Introduction
To Determine:
If the given statement is true or false should be determined.
Introduction:
Alveoli are the tiny sacs that are found in the lungs at the end of each bronchiole. The function of alveoli is to allow the movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood and the lungs. There are about 600 million alveoli in the lungs.

A newborn exhibits signs of respiratory distress due to the lack of surfactant. She has signs of low oxygen and high carbon dioxide.
Explain why the lack of surfactant would result in respiratory distress.
What is surfactant? What cells produce it and how does it work i.e. how specifically does it affect surface tension and alveolar structure (remember La Place's law). Lastly, in the course of term fetal development, explain what mechanism comes into play to assure the sufficient production of surfactant before a term delivery.
Briefly explain two ways interstitial lung disease may affect gas exchange in the lungs
