Chapter 23.1, Problem 1CC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Among the given reagents, the stronger nucleophile has to be identified and explained.

Concept Introduction:

Nucleophile:

The word nucleophile refers to the electron rich species. In the word “nucleophile”,

“nucleo”-nucleus; “phile”-loving. So nucleophiles are literally refers to the nucleus loving species which means they love to attack electron deficient species.

Nucleophilicity:

It is the natural tendency of the nucleophiles to attack the electron deficient electrophilic species.

Nucleophilicity of carbon atom in organometallic compounds:

Organometallic compounds are those exhibiting a bonding between carbon atom and a metal atom (C-M). In this bonding the carbon atom has the ability to act a nucleophile which implies that the carbon atom is being an electron rich species. This is because it withdraws electrons from the metal atom via positive inductive effect which means the electrons in the bonding will flow towards the carbon atom from the electropositive metal atom.
