The bacteria use nitrogen fixing enzymes which converts the N2 to NH4+ (ammonium ions). The bacteria live in symbiotic association with plants, as they consume sugars produced by the plants during photosynthesis and in return, the bacteria fixe nitrogen for the plant tissues.
