Chapter 23.4, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To describe:

An evolutionary trend (in either rabbit or virus) that might occur after a rabbit population first encounters the Myxoma virus.

Introduction:

Myxoma virus is a virus that infects rabbits. It causes myxomatosis in rabbits. This virus was used as a pest control in Australian subcontinent. This virus is very much effective against the host that is it can very easily evade the immune mechanism of hares and rabbits. It causes localized benign fibromas in rabbits and hares.

BASED ON THIS TEXT: Identify the biological process by which the malaria carrying mosquitoes (Anopheles coluzzi or Anopheles gambiae) developed insecticide resistance.
The Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV), is an HIV-like virus that originally attacks the immune system of monkeys and apes. In 1999, researchers identified a strain of chimpanzee SIV called SIVcpz, which was nearly identical to HIV. Which of the following conclusions could be drawn from the similarities and relatedness that exist between humans and primates based on respective strains of viruses?     Mosquitos are vectors of the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV), and HIV. Once injected with their proboscis and introduced viruses into the human bloodstream, viral mutations occur.   Human immunodeficiency virus has reverse transcriptase so it is easier for them to transform into another strain of the virus.   The introduction of new viral strains is inevitable and they do not possess selectivity. Both immune host cells from humans and chimpanzees are susceptible to any viral infection.   Humans and Chimpanzees were similar so it is easier for the Simian Immunodeficiency…
1. What roles do natural selection and sexual selection play in the evolution of a new virus species? Give an example of this found in nature. 2. List the criteria for the Hardy-Weinberg Equation.  Use the Hardy-Weinberg Equation to predict the allele frequency for a population of flowers where p = 0.7 and q = 0.3 3. Explain how natural selection and environmental conditions inside the host could lead to virus speciation.
