Summary Introduction

To determine: The reason for the need of taking the flu shot year after year instead of only once early in life.

Introduction:

Flu is caused by the influenza virus. The influenza virus is an RNA virus that has RNA as its genetic material. The RNA being an unstable biomolecule undergoes consistent mutation. This causes an antigenic drift that changes the shape of its antigen. If the two viruses of different antigen type combine, they cause an antigenic shift that alters the antigens of the daughter cells produce.

Explain how new strains of flu arise
Explain why each choice (a-d) is correct or incorrect. A flu vaccine is needed seasonally to be effective but a polio vaccine is only needed once.  The best explanation of this is a. Flu vaccine is substantially weaker than the polio vaccine. b. The polio virus is substantially weaker than the flu virus. c. Exposure to flu vaccine produces no memory cells from proliferating B lymphocytes. d. The flu has several strains that change seasonally.
Influenza vaccines must be changed yearly because the amino acid sequence of the viral proteins change gradually over time. Based on this information, which is the most logical conclusion? The influenza virusa) is enveloped.     b) is non-enveloped.c) has a DNA genome.     d) has an RNA genome.e) causes a persistent infection.
