Concept explainers
To explain: How the differences of sexual selection in strawberry poison dart frogs (Dendrobates pumilio) could arise and affect the evolution of reproductive isolation in allopatric versus sympatric populations.
Concept introduction:
Strawberry poison-dart frogs (Dendrobates pumilio) are found in Central America mainly in the Costa Rica and adjacent mainland of Panama. Pumiliotoxin which is the main toxin in these frogs is due to their dietary intake of formicine ants. These frogs exhibit an amazing array of color variation which is considered to be the basis of intraspecific male mating calls which lead to ultimately fall the entire population into one species.

- explain the following : 1. Does chromosome structure differ between humans and their closest relative among the apes. 2.How can natural selection promote reproductive isolation in allopatric populationsarrow_forwardWhich of the following forms of reproductive isolation illustrates a prezygotic barrier to gene flow? O Species A forms hybrids with species B and the hybrids are able to breed back with either of the two parent species to produce healthy fertile offspring. O Two closely related birds, the lazuli bunting and indigo bunting, sing similar songs to attract mates and even though human ears can not distinguish them the females never make wrong choices in choosing who to mate with. O Two species of turtles living in a large lake have different ecological requirements and never interact. O Several species of corrals in a Honduras corral reef release gametes about the same time but inter- specific attraction of gametes does not occur. O All but one of these illustrates a type of prezygotic barrier to gene flow.arrow_forwardSelect all that apply. Beetles from two geographically isolated populations are captured and brought to the lab. When an adult male from one population and an adult female from the other population are placed together, they mate, and the female lay eggs a couple of days later. The eggs hatch, the beetles develop into adults but are sterile. Which of the following are true? This is an example of post-zygotic reproductive isolation. O Sexual selection is likely responsible. O This is an example of pre-zygotic reproductive isolation. O Dobzhansky-Muller genetic incompatibility is likely responsible. Question 3 Choose all that apply. Which of the following are true of adaptive radiations? OAdaptive radiations involve relatively rapid speciation. The evolution of the Hawaiian silverswords is an example of an adaptive radiation. OAdaptive radiations can occur when an ancestral species colonizes a new arca and adapts to multiple open niches. Question 4 What are the three major steps of…arrow_forward
- n which situation would it make sense to use the morphological species concept? When you are able to collect data about how individuals in your study use their habitat, but you are unable to determine if they interbreed When working with fossils from extinct organisms When you only have genetic data about each organism in your study When you are not able to collect data about how individuals in your study use their habitat, but you are able to collect reproductive dataarrow_forward1) Choose 2 of the four evolutionary forces and explain it in your own words with an example. 2) Explain punctuated equilibrium in your own words and give an example.arrow_forwardA- the two nematode populations have undergone complete speciation B- individuals reared on different bacteria produce offspring that have a better chance of survival C- The populations appear to be most likely in the process of speciation D- all individuals were equally reproductively successful regardless of mate combinationarrow_forward
- II. Matching Type Directions: Match Column A with the correct answers in Column B by writing the number of your answers before the letter. Column A Column B a. A process in which new species form 1. Thomas Malthus b. Authored the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection 2. Hybrid sterility c. It occurs when a hybrid develops, matures but fails to reproduce 3. Pre-mating isolating mechanism d. States that increasing human population limits 4. Jean Baptiste Lamarck resources e. Species will not mate due to different mating 5. Temporal isolation seasons 6. Speciation f. Sought pieces of evidence for the idea of uniformitarianism 7. Charles Darwin g. It occurs when organisms from the same population and habitat differentiate into two or more species h. It prevents members of different species from mating 8. Sympatric speciation 9. Charles Lyell i. Proposed the inheritance of acquired characteristics as an idea of evolutionarrow_forwardPlease use and cite any source(s) you can find to answer the following questions:1. List and describe the different ways in which species are defined.2. Explain how each of the following makes it difficult to clearly define a species: variation within aspecies, geographically isolated populations, asexual species, fossil organisms.3. List and describe the pre-zygotic barriers as well as the post-zygotic barriers.4. Explain why allopatric speciation would be less likely on an island close to a mainland than on a moreisolated island.arrow_forward1. Explain how a phenotype can increase, decrease, or have no effect on an organisms fitness. 2. Explain what would happen if a particular hair color suddenly gave an advantage under existing environmental conditions. 3. What components in an environment may be different on either side of the barrier? 4. What does the term "reproductive isolation" refer to? 5. Can you hypothesize how three organisms can have similar structures, yet they serve different functions? 6. It would seem that wisdom teeth no longer serve a purpose. Can you propose what purpose they served earlier in our evolution? 7. Explain why the pharyngeal slit becomes the Eustachian tube in humans and a gill in fish.arrow_forward

Be sure to include andexplain the ideas of differential reproductive success and descent with modification. Is the creation of a new species a type of micro-evolution or macro-evolution? 3. Describe 2 prezygotic barriers that can lead to speciation. For each barrier, include an example (these can be real or made up) and identify if this barrier is allopatric or sympatric.arrow_forwardGive a Darwinian explanation of how cheetahs evolved to become faster.
