Marsha Mason, CPA, believes that it is appropriate to obtain an understanding of internal control about halfway through the audit, after she is familiar with the client’s operations and the way the system actually works. She has found through experience that filling out internal control questionnaires and flowcharts early in the engagement is not beneficial because the system rarely functions that way it is supposed to. Later in the engagement, the auditor can prepare flowcharts and questionnaires with relative ease because of the knowledge already obtained on the audit. Evaluate her approach.
The auditor is evaluating the internal control of a new client. Management has prepared its assessment of internal control and has concluded that it has some deficiencies but no significant deficiencies and no material weaknesses. However, in reviewing the work performed by management, including the internal auditor, the auditor observes the following:
-Sample sizes taken by the internal auditor were never more than ten transactions, and most of the tests of operating effectiveness were based on a sample of one performed as part of a walkthrough of a transaction.-Management has fired the former CFO and a new CFO has not been appointed, but management indicates it has depth in the accounting area and is searching for a new CFO.-The company has no formal whistleblowing function because management has an “open-door” policy so that anyone with a problem can take it up the line.-Management’s approach to monitoring internal control is to compare budget with actual expenses and investigate…
Kelly Griffin, an audit manager, had begun preliminary analytical procedures of selected statistics related to the Majestic Hotel. Her objective was to obtain an understanding of the hotel’s business in order to draft a preliminary audit plan. She wanted to see whether she could detect any troublesome areas or questionable accounts that couldrequire special audit attention. Unfortunately, Griffin caught the flu and was hospitalized. From her sickbed, she sent you the schedule she had prepared (Exhibit 4.55.1) and has asked you to write a memorandum identifying areas of potential misstatements or other matters that the preliminary audit plan should cover.
