To describe:
What are the ethical concerns associated with research with primate models of human disease?
Introduction:
Huntington disease (HD) is a common inherited disease in humans. It is caused by a gene that encodes the toxic protein called mutant huntingtin. It causes damage in the nerve cells of the brain and affects the basal ganglia region of the brain. Symptoms of this disease include uncontrolled movements, mood swings, and cognitive decline. This condition also shows frequent dysregulation in addition to the alterations in the immune system of the affected individual.
Explanation of Solution
The ethical concerns that are related to the use of primate models in the research of human diseases are as follows:
- Exposure of the primates to distressing or painful scientific procedures and their effects.
- Housing the primates in the captive environment limits their freedom and their needs. This might eventually lead to mental or physical suffering.
- Death is very often in the scientific researches. It is needed as an integral part of the experiment in order to analyze the tissues in the post mortem.
The ethical concerns that are related to the use of non-human primate models in the research for human diseases are provided.
