Answer to Problem 1RQ

Solution:

(a) Complete oxidation of a molecule of sucrose to CO2 and water

Explanation of Solution

Oxidation is a chemical reaction that is defined as the fusion of oxygen with other elements. This reaction is most commonly seen in rusting of iron. Here, there is a gain of oxygen and loss of hydrogen. The breakdown of sucrose into carbon dioxide and water during the oxidation reaction generates 32 molecules of adenosine triphosphate and requires oxygen. It releases the maximum amount of heat. During conversion of ADP (adenosine diphosphate) to ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the ADP undergoes oxidation and releases water and ATP. The energy released is utilized for the cellular functions. During oxidation, the glucose molecules are cleaved into two pyruvates and without oxygen the pyruvate is converted into lactic acid. The glucose reacts with the oxygen and releases carbon dioxide and water. The energy released in this reaction is less.
