Summary Introduction

To describe: The role of oxygen in aerobic respiration.

Introduction: Aerobic respiration is the aerobic catabolism of nutrients, water, and carbon dioxide. The aerobic respiration involves an electron transport system in which oxygen is the final electron acceptor. Most prokaryotes and eukaryotes use aerobic respiration to obtain energy from glucose.

Explanation of Solution

Bacteria can be classified as either anaerobes or aerobes that sis based upon their metabolic need for oxygen. Bacteria can be further divided into categories according to their oxygen sensitivity. Bacteria that are obligate aerobes must grow in oxygen. This is because these bacteria need oxygen for their metabolism and it carries out aerobic respiration. Oxygen plays an important role in aerobic respiration because an obligate aerobe utilizes oxygen as the terminal electron acceptor in the electron transport chain.
