Chapter 2.4, Problem 2.45PP
Program Plan Intro

Fractional binary numbers:

The decimal notation is represented by the below form:

= = -nm10i×di

From the above equation, each decimal digit “di” ranges between “0” and “9”.

Example:

The example for above equation is given below.

Consider the number 12.3410

12.3410=1×101+2×100+3×101+4×102=1×10+2×1+3×110+4×1100=10+2+310+4100

=12+300+401000=12+3401000=123410

If each binary digit or bit bi ranges between “0” and “1”, then the notation represented by the below equation

= = -nm2i×bi

Example:

The example for given equation is given below:

Consider, the bit “b” is 101.112

101.112=1×22+0×21+1×20+1×21+1×22=1×4+0+1×1+1×121+1×122=4+1+12+14

=5+2+14=534

Simple method to determine the conversion of fractional value to binary number is given below:

Considering a fraction of the form is x2k

  • Now, write the binary value by using the binary representation of “x”, with the point inserted by “k” positions from the right of given binary value.
  • Consider an example, if fractional value is 2516

2516=2524

  • The binary value of “25” is “11001”. Then place the binary point four positions from the right. Finally, the result is 1.1001.
