Concept introduction:
The substitution reactions of coordination complexes often visualize the ligands being directed towards a position which is trans to themselves. This nature of ligand decides the the leaving groups. Hence, this effect of ligand over the rate of substitution of another ligand that is trans to it is the trans effect. It is often witnessed in platinum complexes.
