Concept explainers
To define: Different feeding levels in ecosystems by giving examples.
Introduction: Food chain represents the transfer of food energy from one trophic level to successive trophic levels. A food chain begins with the producers that synthesize food by the process of photosynthesis. The producers are eaten by herbivores which in turn are eaten by carnivores. The carnivores are then eaten by some other carnivores or get decomposed by micro-organisms after they die.
To determine: The feeding level that is most likely to include most humans.

- Consider a trophiccascade with 4 levels: 1) predatory fish that consume planktivorous fish, 2) planktivorous fish that consume zooplankton,3) herbivorous zoplankton that consume phytoplankton, and 4) phytoplankton. True or False: A reduction in predatory fish will increase the level of phytoplankton. True Falsearrow_forwardOptimal foraging theory can make predictions about an animal’s food choice. Which of the following is the most accurate statement about optimal diet breadth as resource quality, handling time and distribution changes? As handling time increases, animals should specialize As the distance between resources increases, animals should generalize As the energy content of the resources increases, animals should generalize As the distance between patches increases, animals should stay longer in a patch The following diagrams show four distribution patterns of resources. Each circle represents one unit of a resource, say, a food item. For which of these distributions would the Marginal Value Theorem be useful for making predictions about optimal foraging behavior. - How does the ecological impact from a diet consisting strictly of animal products (e.g., dairy products, eggs, and meat) compare with that of a strictly vegetarian diet? How many additional ecologically equivalent Calories do you consume each day by including as little as 10% of your Calories from animal sources?arrow_forwardIf the rate of some process is governed by the abundance of prey individuals, we say that it is prey-dependent. Give some examples of prey-dependent processes.arrow_forwardHow do humans differ from other species in the ability to “choose”a carrying capacity for their environment?arrow_forward
- Explain how and why predator and prey populations change during Merit ?arrow_forwardExplain the effects on the ecosystem if Wood rat were removed. Provide both positive (if any) and negative impacts on the ecosystem. Be sure and include as many of the following terms in your writing as possible: autotroph, heterotroph, producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer, carnivore, omnivore, herbivore, energy, population, increase, and decrease.arrow_forwardOld People e = 100 calories λ = 10 per night h = 2 hours Middle Aged People e = 400 calories λ = 20 per night h = 5 hours Young Adults e = 300 calories λ = 10 per night h = 2.5 hours Suppose that the organism need 1000 calories per night. - Which food item should the organism prefer, and which ones would you expect them to eat on a regular basis? Explain why and show calculations. - Explain marginal value theorem, and how it might relate to an organisms foraging decisions. - λ for Old People should increase in the coming years. How could that affect this organisms feeding on humans?arrow_forward
