Concept explainers
To explain:
The reason for the production of thousands of acorns by an oak tree and also explain the reason that a plant whose seeds disperse far from the parent have better reproductive success than one whose seeds falls at the base of the parent plant.
Concept introduction:
Plant growth and development begins with the process of germination. This process requires oxygen, water, and optimal temperature. The seed absorbs water that ruptures its seed coat due to swelling and exposes the plant's embryo to oxygen. Growth and development continue after the embryo bursts out of seed coat as rapidly dividing cells in the meristems add to the length of roots and shoots. The new cells differentiate into vascular tissue, ground tissue and dermal tissue that make up the body of the plant.
