Chapter 24.1, Problem 2CF
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The way through which scientists measure the volume of methane that had been consumed by microbes.

Introduction:

Methanogens are the methane-producing bacteria. They use hydrogen and carbon dioxide available in the environment to produce energy and methane gas. Methane is considered the dominant gas in the greenhouse. Methanogens are also found in the digestive tracts of cattle which facilitate the breakdown of complex polysaccharide cellulose which is present in their fodder. Symbiotic association of methanogens with rumen microbes helps in the transfer of hydrogen. Production and release of methane gas also take place.
