To suit the volant adaptation, they developed wings that are made up of feathers, and this helps the birds to fly. The hair and fur of the mammals cover the epidermis and insulate the internal anatomy from the harsh and cold environment that is found outside. Both the hair and feather are made up of a protein known as keratin.
