Chapter 25, Problem 11CYU
Summary Introduction

To review:

The better option among a weak base or a strong base to minimize a change in the pH, if the solution is added by a stong acid.

Introduction:

Buffer is an aqueous solution which resist the pH changes in the solution. It consists of a mixture of weak acid and conjugate strong base or strong acid and weak conjugate base. Buffer solutions are used to maintain a constant and stable pH value. An important example of biological pH buffer system is bicarbonate buffering system, which helps in the regulation of pH of blood.

To minimize the sharp pH shift that occurs when a strong acid is added to a solution, is it better to add a weak base or a strong base? Why?
Can you explain the various options and how did you come to the answer? How to determine when something is a weak acid? Or strong acid or base?
