Concept explainers
Explain why we see the Milky Way as a faint band of light stretching across the sky.
To explain:
The reason for the Milky Way to be visible as a faint band of light across the sky.
Explanation of Solution
Milky Way is the home galaxy to the Solar system. Milky Way is a spiral shaped galaxy and contains hundred billion stars. It is about 13.5 billion years old. It is about 30 kpc in diameter.
Solar system lies in the outer regions of the Milky Way in the Orion arm of the Milky Way galaxy. The galactic center if about 8.4kpc away from the Sun.
It is named as Milky Way because of its appearance in the night sky. It appears as a hazy white band of clouds with billions of stars embedded in it. From the Earth, the other arm of the Milky Way is visible. That is why, it appears as a band of stars.

- The dwarf galaxy in Sagittarius is the one closest to the Milky Way, yet it was discovered only in 1994. Can you think of a reason it was not discovered earlier? (Hint: Think about what else is in its constellation.)arrow_forwardMost distances in the Galaxy are measured in light-years instead of meters. Why do you think this is the case?arrow_forwardThe diameter of our disk-shaped galaxy, the Milky Way, is about 1.0×105light-years. The distance to the Andromeda galaxy, which is the spiral galaxynearest to the Milky Way, is about 2.5 million light-years. If a scale modelrepresents the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies as dinner plates 20 cm indiameter, determine the distance between the centers of the two plates.arrow_forward
- Suppose the Milky Way was a band of light extending only halfway around the sky (that is, in a semicircle). What, then, would you conclude about the Sun’s location in the Galaxy? Give your reasoning.arrow_forwardA typical galaxy is shown on the first page of the Universe Bowl on the inside cover of the printed book. Express the number of stars in this typical galaxy in scientific notation.arrow_forwardHuman civilization is about 10,000 years old as measured by the development of agriculture. If your telescope collects starlight tonight that has been traveling for 10,000 years, is that star inside or outside our Milky Way Galaxy? Is it likely that the star has changed much during that time?arrow_forward
