Infection in an individual by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) causes a syndrome, containing a cluster of diseases by the same cause, called Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). It causes a very significant reduction in the number of helper T-lymphocytes. An AIDS patient is prone to infections by fungi, other viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and even a rare type of blood vessel cancer.
