Answer to Problem 7P

The orbital period of the asteroid is 5.94years, the average distance of asteroid from the Sun is 2.07×1011m and the orbital velocity of the asteroid is 25.38km/s.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for the orbital period of the asteroid.

    p=P2        (I)

Here, p is the orbital period of the asteroid and P is the orbital period of the Jupiter.

Write the expression for the Kepler’s third law.

    p2=4π2GMd3        (II)

Here, d is the average distance of asteroid from the Sun, G is the gravitational constant, and M is the mass of the Sun.

Write the expression for the orbital velocity of the asteroid.

    v=GMd        (III)

Here, v is the orbital velocity of the asteroid.

Refer to the Celestial Profile of Jupiter to obtain the orbital period of Jupiter as 11.87years.

Conclusion:

Substitute 11.87years for P in equation (I) to find the orbital period of the asteroid.

    p=11.87years2=5.94years

Substitute 5.94years for p, 6.67×1011m3/kgs2 for G, and 2×1030kg for M in equation (II) to find the average distance of asteroid from the Sun.

    (5.94years×3.154×107s1year)2=4π2(6.67×1011m3/kgs2)(2×1030kg)d3d3=351×1014s2(13.34×1019m3/s2)4π2d=8.9×1033m33=2.07×1011m

Substitute 2.07×1011m for d, 6.67×1011m3/kgs2 for G, and 2×1030kg for M in equation (III) to find the orbital velocity of the asteroid.

    v=(6.67×1011m3/kgs2)(2×1030kg)2.07×1011m=6.44×108m2/s2=(25377.16m/s×103km1m)=25.38km/s

Therefore, the orbital period of the asteroid is 5.94years, the average distance of asteroid from the Sun is 2.07×1011m and the orbital velocity of the asteroid is 25.38km/s.

the area in between Mars' and Jupiter's orbit to be ~1.6e18 km2. Since there are roughly 750,000 asteroids, how much area (in km2) is available for one asteroid? Use this calculation to argue whether you are likely (or not) to hit an asteroid while flying through the asteroid belt. (Hint: To answer the first part of the question, find the area per asteroid)
What is the angular diameter of Saturn (in degrees) as seen from the surface of Dione?   Note: Necessary data can be found in this Celestial Profile and in this table. Hint: Use the small-angle formula, angular diameter (in arc seconds) 2.06 ✕ 105  =  linear diameter distance
After Ceres was promoted to a dwarf planet, we now recognize the largest known asteroid to be Vesta, with a mass of 2.67 × 1020 kg and a diameter ranging from 578 km to 458 km. Assuming that Vesta is spherical with radius 520 km, find the approximate escape velocity from its surface.
