Most sharks avoid humans, but large sharks of some species can be dangerous to swimmers and divers. However, shark attacks on people are rare. In the United States, dog attacks kill 30 times more people than sharks do. A U.S. resident is 75 times more likely to die from a lightning strike than from a shark attack, and a beachgoer is far more likely to drown than to be bitten by a shark. Nonetheless, unprovoked shark attacks do occur. During 2014, for example, there were 72 documented attacks in the world, 3 of them fatal. About 65% of attacks were on people who were surfing. To reduce the (already very small) risk of a shark attack, experts recommend several precautions. For example, stay in a group while in the water, because most shark attacks are on lone individuals. Stay out of the water at night, dawn, or dusk, when sharks are most active. Refrain from entering the water when bleeding from an open wound, because sharks can detect blood in the water. And avoid areas that are being actively fished, because sharks are attracted to baitfish.

- DDT was banned because it was causing serious damage to birds of prey – in particular, it weakened the shells of their eggs, meaning that their eggs often broke before their young hatched. Why do you think birds of prey were disproportionately affected by DDT?arrow_forwardFeral cat in wild compared to domestic cat are they larger or same size? Feral cats are they tougher then domestic cats for predators like bobcats or raccoons or possum or skunks or weasel? If feral cat has litter how they defend the litter from predators like dogs gain pack to surrive as cats won’t?arrow_forwardA desert beetle in northern Mexico can change its behavior to regulate its body temperature above 35c. - How do whales and dolphins get oxygen at night?A. They absorb oxygen from the water.B. They sleep in just one hemisphere at a time.C. They lower their metabolism so that they need to breathe only a few times per night.D. They store oxygen in their digestive system.arrow_forwardThe Mojave Desert of the western United States is characterized by a hot, dry climate. Scientists predict that temperatures in this region will increase by an average of 4.7° F over the next 30 years. Birds found here (like ground-dwelling roadrunners) are endotherms and have many adaptations to reduce the amount of heat absorbed into the body while active in the daytime. If temperatures increase in this area as predicted, how might the plumage (the feathers covering the body) of these roadrunners change under the influence of natural selection? 1:The plumage will likely become longer and increase heat absorption into the body. 2:The plumage will likely become darker and increase heat absorbed from the environment. 3:The plumaqe will likely become lighter and increase heat reflected away from the body. 4:The plumage will likely become thicker and increase the amount of heat trapped by the body.arrow_forwardA rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide increases ocean acidity, making it harder for animals to build calcium carbonate parts. List some invertebrate animals that increased ocean acidity could harm in this wayarrow_forward
- Insects are incredibly nutritious for primates. Why don't all primates eat only insects? A. Because insects are gross. B. Because larger primates like chimps and gorillas have higher metabolisms and they need sugar from fruit. C. Because larger primates like chimps and gorillas cannot get enough calories from insects. D. Because small primates have low metabolisms and they can survive off of just insects.arrow_forwardCamels are found in desert where as lions are found in jungle.by which phenomenon they survive in that particular habits and how?arrow_forwardAn example of paedomorphosis would be a ____. salamander that becomes sexually mature while still retaining its gills moose that has antlers that are much larger than its ancestors primate with a smaller head than its ancestors duck that did not have webbed toes due to lack of the paracrine hormone gremlinarrow_forward
