To discuss:
The control of colonic motility; the difference between its haustral contractions and mass movement; the role of gastrocolic and duodenocolic reflexes.
Introduction:
The large intestine measures about 5 feet long, which is named because of its large diameter. The large intestine accepts about 500 milliliter of food residue daily that are undigested. These residues are reduced to 150 milliliters of stool by the absorption of salts and water. The stool is eliminated by the process of defecation. Defecation reflexes are stimulated by the stretching of the rectum that accounts for the need to defecate and it is mostly felt after a mealtime. These reflexes are useful in training house pets and children.
