To determine:
The function of each structure in the portal triad of the hepatic lobule and the mechanism by which they work together to contribute to the overall functioning of the liver.
Introduction:
The liver is located in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, immediately inferior to the diaphragm. A connective tissue capsule branches through the liver and forms septa that partition the liver into thousands of small, polyhedral hepatic lobules. The hepatic lobules are the classic structural and functional units of the liver. Hepatocytes are the liver cells that lie within hepatic lobules. The portal triads are present at the periphery of each lobule. They are composed of branches of the hepatic portal vein, the hepatic artery, and the bile duct.
