To explain: The relation between the elastic recoil and compliance.

Concept introduction: The chest wall and the lungs have the elastic properties that allow the expansion process throughout the inspiration and back to the resting volume throughout expiration. The elasticity properties of the lungs are caused by two reasons. One reason is the elastin fibers present in the alveolar walls, surrounding the small airways, and the pulmonary capillaries. Another reason is the surface tension at the alveolar air-liquid surface. The elasticity properties of the chest wall cause the configuration of the chest bones and the musculature.
