Chapter 27, Problem 64P
Your hospital is installing a new MRI scanner using a 3.5-H superconducting solenoid carrying 1.8 kA. Copper is embedded in the coils to carry the current in the event of a quench (see Example 27.9). As safety officer, you’re to specify (a) the maximum resistance that will limit power dissipation to 100 kW immediately after a loss of superconductivity and (b) the time it will take the power to drop to 50 kW. What specs do you give?

A certain superconducting magnet in the form of a solenoid of length 0.32 m can generate a magnetic field of 7.0 T in its core when its coils carry a current of 70 A. The windings, made of a niobium-titanium alloy, must be cooled to 4.2 K. Find the number of turns in the solenoid.
A very large, superconducting solenoid such as one used in MRI scans, stores 1.00 MJ of energy in its magnetic field when 100 A flows.
If the coils “go normal,” they gain resistance and start to dissipate thermal energy. What temperature increase is produced if all the stored energy goes into heating the 1000 kg magnet, given its average specific heat is 200 J/kg.oC ?
A superconducting solenoid is to be designed to generate a magnetic field of 4.00 T. If the solenoid winding has 1 000 turns/m, what is the required current? (µ0 = 4π×10-7T×m/A)
