Particle round about. Figure 28-29 shows 11 paths through a region of uniform magnetic field. One path is a straight line: the rest are half-circles. Table 28-4 gives the masses, charges, and speeds of 11 particles that take these paths through the field in the directions shown. Which path in the figure corresponds to which particle in the table? (The direction of the magnetic field can be determined by means of one of the paths, which is unique.)

- Given the identification of the particles in Figure 31.2b, is the direction of the external magnetic field in Figure 31.2a (a) into the page, (b) out of the page, (c) impossible to determine?arrow_forwardAn electron is accelerated through 2.40 103 V from rest and then enters a uniform 1.70-T magnetic field. What are (a) the maximum and (b) the minimum values of the magnetic force this particle experiences?arrow_forwardA long, straight, horizontal wire carries a left-to-right current of 20 A. If the wire is placed in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 4.0105 T that is directed vertically downward, what is tire resultant magnitude of the magnetic field 20 cm above the wire? 20 cm below the wire?arrow_forward
- Two long wires, one of which has a semicircular tend of radius R, are positioned as shown in the accompanying figure. If both wires carry a current I, how far apart must then parallel sections be so that the net magnetic field at P is zero? Does the current in the straight wire flow up or down?arrow_forwardA proton (charge + e, mass mp), a deuteron (charge + e, mass 2mp), and an alpha particle (charge +2e, mass 4mp) are accelerated from rest through a common potential difference V. Each of the particles enters a uniform magnetic field B, with its velocity in a direction perpendicular to B. The proton moves in a circular path of radius rp. In terms of rp, determine (a) the radius rd of the circular orbit for the deuteron and (b) the radius ra for the alpha particle.arrow_forwardConsider the magnetic field due to the current in the wire shown in Figure 22.24. Rank the points A, B, and C in terms of magnitude of the magnetic field that is due to the current in just the length element ds shown, from greatest to least. Figure 22.24 (Quick Quiz 22.4) Where is the magnetic field the greatest?arrow_forward
- , A proton, deuteron, and an alpha-particle ae all accelerated from rest through the same potential difference. They then enter the same magnetic field, moving perpendicular to it. Compute the ratios of the radii of their circular paths. Assume that md= 2wmp and ma= 4mp.arrow_forwardA circular coil of radius 5.0 cm is wound with five turns and carries a current of 5.0 A. If the coil is placed in a uniform magnetic field of strength 5.0 T, what is the maximum torque on it?arrow_forwardA proton (charge +e, mass mp), a deuteron (charge +e, mass 2mp), and an alpha particle (charge +2e, mass 4mp) are accelerated from rest through a common potential difference V. Each of the particles enters a uniform magnetic field B, with its velocity in a direction perpendicular to B. The proton moves in a circular path of radius p. In terms of p, determine (a) the radius rd of the circular orbit for the deuteron and (b) the radius r for the alpha particle.arrow_forward

What is the strength of the uniform magnetic field B that will allow the electron to travel undeflected through the plates? Assume E and B are perpendicular.arrow_forwardA cyclotron used to accelerate protons has a uniform magnetic field of 0.69 T. What is the frequency at which the potential difference between the dees must oscillate? (Your result must be in units of MHz's. Include 1 digit after the decimal point and maximum of 3% of error is accepted in your answer. Take elementary charge 1.6 x 10 -19 C, mass of proton 1.67 x 10 -27 kg and π = 3.14.)arrow_forwardIn which orientation of the particle's velocity relative to the magnetic field can we yield the minimal magnetic force?a.
