Chapter 28, Problem 28.59AP
A rechargeable battery has an emf of 13.2 V and an internal resistance of 0.850 Ω. It is charged by a 14.7-V power supply for a time interval of 1.80 h. Alter charging, the battery returns to its original state as it delivers a constant current to a load resistor over 7.30 h. Find the efficiency of the battery as an energy storage device. (The efficiency here is defined as the energy delivered to the load during discharge divided by the energy delivered by the 14.7-V power supply during the charging process.)

- If you try and measure the voltage of a battery with a voltmeter connected in series, you won't get a completely accurate measurement because of the internal resistance of the battery. Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.arrow_forwardIn a circuit, all the power delivered by the battery must be dissipated by the elements to the circuit. This is simply a statement of the conservation of energy. How much energy dissipated depends on the resistance of the element and the voltage across the resistor, or the current through it. The relevant equations for the problems are as follows. For a circuit element, the power dissipated (or generated) is P = IV, where Vand I are the voltage across and current through a circuit element. We know that a resistor obeys OhmA ¢A^A^'s Law V=IR, which means that for a resistor, the power dissipated is P = I*R = V²/R.
