Chapter 28, Problem 41A

If the sky on a certain planet in the solar system were normally orange, what color would sunsets be?

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark
To determine

The color of the sunset when the sky on a certain planet is orange in the solar system.

Explanation of Solution

Introduction:

The particles of the medium deviate the light in different directions when the light strikes on the particles. This phenomenon is known as the scattering of light.

Explanation:

The sky appears blue form the earth because the fine particles in the atmosphere scatter blue light when the white sunlight falls on the dust particles of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Similarly, if the sky color is orange, the molecules present in the atmosphere of the planet having low frequency and being scattered.

During the sunset, the orange color is completely absorbed and only the high-frequency colors will appear and that is the blue color.

From the color concept, it is the W − O = B (white minus orange will give the blue color)

Conclusion:

During the sunset, the sky appears as blue while all the orange is absorbed.
