Chapter 28.2, Problem 1CT
Summary Introduction
To explain:
Whether you support or not the laws to restrict the importation of non-native plants and animals in the natural communities accidently or through natural spread.
Introduction:
Invasive species of plants and animals are those species which do not form a part of the natural habitat and they are introduced into this region leading to the disturbance of the ecosystem. They compete with the original inhabitant species of the natural habitat and destroy the natural environment.

Which of the following organisms would be most likely to become invasive if introduced to a new habitat?
A- A plant that is pollinated by a single species of insect
B- A plant that requires a long period of cold weather in order to germinate
C- An animal that reaches sexual maturity at 20 years of age
D- A fungus that produces millions of spores that disperse on the wind
E- An animal that feeds on only one species of plant
A. Most varieties of Sedum are not native plants in Albany or New York City. Why may it be dangerous to introduce a new species to an established ecosystem?B. How does a green roof reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?C. Why is it important to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?D. State one disadvantage of a green roof.
E. What are other ways the owners or architects of a building can reduce its carbon footprint?
Organisms that damage crop plants are the most costly of introduced species. Weeds, pathogenic microbes, and arthropods that attack crops together account for half of the costs documented by Pimentel and his colleagues. What steps can we—farmers, governments, and all of us as a society—take to minimize the impacts of invasive species on crops?

It is a major problem in Victoria’s Strzelecki, Otway and Dandenong ranges. More than 1000 dairy farms are affected by the weed. Biological control involves introducing a living predator (plant or animal) to control the species rather than using a chemical pesticide. Researchers are examining the use of beetles and moths as a biological control for ragwort. The beetles and moths will feed on the weed. This is an alternative to using chemical pesticides to kill the ragwort. For biological control to contribute to ecologically sustainable development, it is essential that. pesticide companies maintain profits. food production is high in all regions. there is community support for biological control. biological control does not degrade the environment for future generations.arrow_forwardWhat should be done about an invasive species, especially one that dominates an ecosystem or causes economic damage?
