Chapter 28.3, Problem 2CC
Summary Introduction

To determine:

Whetherthe mesophyll of a plant species that has vertically oriented leaves could be divided into spongy and palisade layer.

Introduction:

A leaf comprises stomata for the exchange of CO2 and O2 between the surrounding air and inside the leaf. Stomata are the pores that can interrupt the epidermis of leaves. The entire area of stomata consists two epidermal cells: guard cells and mesophyll.

The mesophyll is a ground tissue of a leaf. Its middle layer is located between upper and lower epidermal layers. Mesophyll consist parenchyma cells for photosynthesis. The mesophyll cells have two distinct layers: palisade and spongy.

If a plant species has vertically oriented leaves, would you expect its mesophyll to be divided into spongy and palisade layers? Explain.
Lab 6- Vascular Plant Structures What are the 4 main tissue types discussed (from the outline on p.127) Know this terminology if asked to locate/identify the following: vascular cylinder, vascular bundle, ground tissue, epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, guard cells, stoma, xylem, phloem. Can you determine if a plant is a monocot or dicot just by looking at the pattern of the roots? The pattern of the veins in the leaf? The pattern of the vascular bundles in the stem?
Vascular plants evolved to have the apomorphic characteristics that enabled them to grow with greater height and thrive with efficiency in sustaining more complex structures. Select one: O True O False The sporophyte structure in vascular plants is dependent on the gametophyte structure. Select one: True False The presence of lignin in the secondary cell wall structure of vascular plants acts as a cementing agent between cellulose fibrils. Select one: True False
