Summary Introduction

To determine: The parasitic and host partner in controlled parasitism in lichen.

Introduction: Lichen is a symbiotic association which is present between algae and fungus. They are slow growing and can live for centuries. Lichens can be found growing in almost all parts of the terrestrial world from tropical rain forest to mobile sand dunes. They secrete some chemicals which help in weathering of rocks which leads to soil formation.

Many biologists consider a lichen an example of controlled parasitism. In this view, which component is the likely parasite, and which is the likely host?
What is a lichen? Why is this considered an example of a parasite-host relationship? Why might you also consider it a mutualistic interaction?
Parasitism is a symbiotic relationship, where the parasite (symbiont) obtains nutrients from its host. 2) Describe one invertebrate endoparasite you find interesting and identify its definitive host (and any intermediate hosts). 3) Describe one invertebrate ectoparasite you find interesting and identify its definitive host (and any intermediate hosts).
