Monitoring quality of power equipment. Mechanical Engineering (February 2005) reported on the need for wireless networks to monitor tile quality of industrial equipment. For example, consider Eaton Corp., a company that develops distribution products. Eaton estimates that 90% of the electrical switching devices it sells can monitor the quality of the power running through the dev1ce. Eaton further estimates that of the buyers of electrical switching devices capable of monitoring quality. 90% do not wire the equipment up for that purpose. Use this information to estimate the probability that an Eaton electrical switching device is capable of monitoring power quality and is wired up for that purpose

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardLarge companies typically collect volumes of data before designing a product, not only to gain information as to whether the product should be released, but also to pinpoint which markets would be the best targets for the product. Several months ago, I was interviewed by such a company while shopping at a mall. I was asked about my exercise habits and whether or not I'd be interested in buying a video/DVD designed to teach stretching exercises. I fall into the male, 18 – 35-years-old category, and I guessed that, like me, many males in that category would not be interested in a stretching video. My friend Amanda falls in the female, older-than-35 category, and I was thinking that she might like the stretching video. After being interviewed, I looked at the interviewer's results. Of the 97 people in my market category who had been interviewed, 16 said they would buy the product, and of the 101 people in Amanda's market category, 31 said they would buy it. Assuming that these data came…arrow_forwardBurger Dome sells hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries, soft drinks, and milk shakes, as well as a limited number of specialty items and dessert selections. Although Burger Dome would like to serve each customer immediately, at times more customers arrive than can be handled by the Burger Dome food service staff. Thus, customers wait in line to place and receive their orders. Suppose that Burger Dome analyzed data on customer arrivals and concluded that the arrival rate is 45 customers per hour and 1 customer processed per minute. Compare a multiple-server waiting line system with a shared queue to a multiple-server waiting line system with a dedicated queue for each server. Suppose Burger Dome establishes two servers but arranges the restaurant layout so that an arriving customer must decide which server's queue to join. Assume that this system equally splits the customer arrivals so that each server sees half of the customers. How does this system compare with the two-server…arrow_forward
