(II) The pilot of an airplane traveling 170km/h wants to drop supplies to flood victims isolated on a patch of land 150m below. The supplies should he dropped how many seconds before the plane is directly overhead?
Choose downward to be the positive y direction. The origin is the point where the supplies are dropped. In the vertical direction. vy0 = 0. ay = 9.80 m/s2, y0 = 0, and the final position is y = 150 m. The time of flight is found from applying Eq. 2-12b to the vertical motion.
Note that the horizontal speed of the airplane does not enter into this calculation.

The soccer ball feels wind resistance which causes it to slow horizontally with constant acceleration magnitude a, = 0.54 m/s, while leaving its vertical motion unchanged. Assume any other air resistance is negligible. Choose the positive direction ofx from initial point towards final point of flight. Use a Cartesian coordinate system with the origin at the ball's initial position.arrow_forward
