Concept explainers
The shot put is a track-and-field event in which athletes throw a heavy ball—the shot—as far as possible. The best athletes can throw the shot as far as 23 m. Athletes who use the “glide” technique push the shot outward in a reasonably straight line, accelerating it over a distance of about 2.0 m. What acceleration do they provide to the shot as they push on it? Assume that the shot is launched at an angle of 37°, a reasonable value for an excellent throw. You can assume that the shot lands at the same height from which it is thrown; this simplifies the calculation considerably, and makes only a small difference in the final result.

- A rocket is launched vertically upward from rest on the ground, and its thrust gives the rocket a constant upward acceleration of 6m/s?. If the fuel is exhausted 19.6 seconds after the launch, what was the maximum altitude that can be reached by the rocket?arrow_forwardIn a football game, a player wants to kick the ball as far as possible, but also make sure that it stays in the air as long as possible, so that there is enough time for other players to run down the field and tackle the receiver. If the football is supposed to travel a distance of 49.8 m and stay in the air for 4.41 s, what initial angle and speed does the player have to provide? You can assume that the initial and final vertical coordinate are zero.arrow_forwardIt is learnt that in an idealised model of projectile motion, the vertical component cannot be parallel to gravity. However, in a case with air resistance, could the vertical component be 0 and the object travelling directly downwards after being affected by air drag after some time?arrow_forward
- In a classic clip on Americas Funniest Home Videos, a sleeping cat rolls gently off the top of a warm TV set. Ignoring air resistance, calculate the position and velocity of the cat after (a) 0.100 s, (b) 0.200 s, and (c) 0.300 s.arrow_forwardWhen the pilot reverses the propeller in a boat moving north, the boat moves with an acceleration directed south. Assume the acceleration of the boat remains constant in magnitude and direction. What happens to the boat? (a) It eventually stops and remains stopped. (b) It eventually stops and then speeds up in the forward direction. (c) It eventually stops and then speeds up in the reverse direction. (d) It never stops but loses speed more and more slowly forever. (e) It never stops but continues to speed up in the forward direction.arrow_forwardA sailor drops a wrench from the top of a sailboats vertical mast while the boat is moving rapidly and steadily straight forward. Where will the wrench hit the deck? (a) ahead of the base of the mast (b) at the base of the mast (c) behind the base of the mast (d) on the windward side of the base of the mast (e) None of the choices (a) through (d) is true.arrow_forward
- In which of the following situations is the moving object appropriately modeled as a projectile? Choose all correct answers. (a) A shoe is tossed in an arbitrary direction. (b) A jet airplane crosses the sky with its engines thrusting the plane forward. (c) A rocket leaves the launch pad. (d) A rocket moves through the sky, at much less than the speed of sound, after its fuel has been used up. (e) A diver throws a stone under water.arrow_forwardA sailor drops a wrench front the top of a sailboats vertical mast while the boat is moving rapidly and steadily straight forward. Where will the wrench hit the deck? (a) ahead of the base of the mast (b) at the base of the mast (c) behind the base of the mast (d) on the windward side of the base of the mast (e) None of the choices (a) through (d) is true.arrow_forwardA parachutist is falling with his open parachute. Does he experience a constant acceleration? why or why notarrow_forward
- Which of the following is TRUE for an object thrown along horizontal? Choose the answer: a. it has a constant horizontal velocity b. it has a uniform vertical acceleration c. both a and b c. neither a nor barrow_forwardNow, imagine an elephant and a feather under free-fall (if there is no air resistance) being dropped from the same height at the same exact moment. Which one do you think will reach the ground first? How can you tell?arrow_forwardA boy wishes to throw a ball over a flat roofed school house that stands 12 m wide and 7.5 m high on level ground. Assuming that the ball will leave his hand at a height of 5 m above the ground, determine how far from the wall he should take his hand in order to make the ball clear the roof with least effort, that is, with minimum velocity.arrow_forward
