Concept explainers
A person riding in a subway train drops a ball from rest straight downward, relative to the interior of the train. The train is moving horizontally with a constant speed of 6.7 m/s. A second person standing at rest on the subway platform observes the ball drop. From the point of view of the person on the platform, the ball is released at the position x = 0 and y = 1.2 m. Make a plot of the position of the ball for the times t = 0, 0.1 s, 0.2 s, 0.3 s, and 0.4 s. (Your plot is parabolic in shape as we shall see in Chapter 4.)

- Figure OQ3.3 shows a birds-eye view of a car going around a highway curve. As the car moves from point 1 to point 2, its speed doubles. Which of the vectors (a) through (e) shows the direction of the cars average acceleration between these two points?arrow_forwardYou are on a train that is traveling at 3.0 m/s along a level straight track. Very near and parallel to the track is a wall that slopes upward at a 12° angle with the horizontal. As you face the window (0.777 m high, 2.26 m wide) in your compartment, the train is moving to the left, as the drawing indicates. The top edge of the wall first appears at window corner A and eventually disappears at window corner B. How much time, in seconds, passes between appearance and disappearance of the upper edge of the wall? A B A 3.0 m/s 12⁰ Barrow_forwardDuring a baseball game the ball is hit at home base 1 meter above ground level with a bat. After having traveled a horizontal distance of 30 m, it is 20 m above ground level. An outfielder runs to meet the ball and catches it as he dives, just 10 cm from the ground. The outfielder is 80 m away from home base when he catches the ball. Assuming the path of the ball is approximately parabolic, what is the greatest height the ball reaches?arrow_forward
- A student standing on a cliff that is a vertical height d = 8.0 m above the level ground throws a stone with velocity v0 = 24 m/s at an angle θ = 21 ° below horizontal. The stone moves without air resistance; use a Cartesian coordinate system with the origin at the stone's initial position. With what speed, vf in meters per second, does the stone strike the ground?arrow_forwardA person plays with a tennis ball in a large room and tries to throw the ball from one end of the room and hit a picture hanging h = 30 cm from the ceiling on the opposite end of the room. It is assumed, that the person throwing the ball, throws the ball in the same height as the picture. The ball just barely avoids touching the ceiling. The room is L = 10 m long. a) Determine the initial speed of the ball, the initial angle and duration of flight if the ball has to hit the picture.arrow_forwardAn archer aims at a target that is a horizontal distance 55.0 m away and 5.0 m above the ground. The archer launches her arrow from of height of 1.5 m off the ground, and the arrow hits the target. The arrow is completely horizontal after sticking to the target (i.e., the arrow was traveling horizontally just before hitting the target). What was the initial speed of the arrow, in m/s?arrow_forward
- A train travels due south at 35.0 m/s (relative to the ground) in a rain that is blown toward the south by the wind. The path of each raindrop makes an angle of 50.0° with the vertical, as measured by an observer stationary on the ground. An observer on the train, however, sees the drops fall perfectly vertically. Determine the speed of the raindrops relative to the ground.arrow_forwardA student standing on a cliff that is a vertical height d = 8.0 m above the level ground throws a stone with velocity v0 = 24 m/s at an angle θ = 35 ° below horizontal. The stone moves without air resistance; use a Cartesian coordinate system with the origin at the stone's initial position. With what speed, vf in meters per second, does the stone strike the ground? If the stone had been thrown from the clifftop with the same initial speed and the same angle, but above the horizontal, would its impact velocity be different?arrow_forwardA small ball is released from rest from a point that is 40m above horizontal line ground. The ball bounces on the ground and rebounds vertically. Each time the ball bounces on the ground the speed of the ball is instantaneously reduced by 50%. The ball is modelled as a particle moving freely under gravity from the instant when it is released until it first hits the ground and between each successive bounce. Find the time from the instant when the ball is released from the rest to the instant when it hits the ground for the second timearrow_forward
- A car is moving on a straight road in a fixed direction at a constant speed of v = 64 km/h with respect to the road. You wish to state the kinematic vectors of the motion of the car by using a Cartesian coordinate system whose positive x-axis is pointed in the direction of the motion of the car and the origin is fixed at some point on the road. Part (a) What is the expression for the velocity of the car, using the speed v and the unit vectors i, j, and k? Part (b) What is the x-component of the position vector, in units of kilometers, at time t = 0.035 hr?arrow_forwardAt time t = 0, a particle is located at the point (1,3,8). It travels in a straight line to the point (5,9,6), has speed 7 at (1,3,8) and constant acceleration 4i + 6j - 2k. Find an equation for the position vector r(t) of the particle at time t. The equation for the position vector r(t) of the particle at time t is r(t) = (Type exact answers, using radicals as needed.) i+ j+ k.arrow_forwardA computer-controlled ball launcher on a ledge at height h = 6 m above level ground ejects a ball at initial speed v0 = 7.7 m/s at an angle of θ1 = 35 degrees above the horizontal. The computer then commands the launcher to change its launch angle to a specific value θ2 below the horizontal, and to launch a second ball exactly 1.00 seconds after the first ball at a different speed from the first one. Assume the balls are launched from the same height, move in the same plane, and that air resistance can be ignored. The launch of the second ball is arranged such that the second ball collides with the first ball at a height h/2 above the level ground. This requires the second ball to have a specific initial speed and launch angle. What is the required launch angle, recalling that an angle below horizontal is negative?arrow_forward
