- 21 12 Replies, 12 Unread DISCUSSION - Who Actually "Invented" Calculus? Calculus has a lot of interesting/strange/weird history. My personal favorite is the strange history behind "L'Hopital's Rule" (which we'll learn about in Chapter 4 and might be a discussion for a future date!) but the weird history goes even further back than that. It goes all the way back to the very invention of Calculus by... umm... by... umm well we don't really know! There's some controversy around who actually discovered Calculus. On one side is the famous English mathematician Isaac Newton who was looking for a way to help simplify some problems he was having with his physics studies. On the other side is German mathematician/philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz who discovered Calculus as he was developing some of his other mathematical ideas/theories. They both actually "invented" Calculus and both published papers on their findings regarding Calculus, but the real debate is which one was first? Who first…arrow_forwardPlease include detailed work.
