Chapter 3, Problem 8CHI

LPS is synthesized in the cytoplasm and then transported to and inserted into the outer membrane. This is complicated by the amphipathic nature of LPS. Recently two different laboratories reported their studies on seven LPS transport proteins (Lpt proteins) that move LPS from the cytoplasm into the outer membrane. Several of the Lpt proteins fold to form a structure called a β-jelly roll, which can be described as being “greasy.” Other Lpt proteins fold to form a β-barrel. Hypothesize how each fold might interact with an LPS molecule. Why would two different types of proteins be needed?

Polypeptides which are normally synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum are about20 amino acids longer when they are synthesized by ribosomes not attached to the endoplasmicreticulum, What is the significance of this increase in length?
Researchers have discovered a new membrane protein that has three transmembrane domain αhelixes that span the lipid bilayer.a. If the lipid bilayer is 30 Å thick, what is the smallest number of amino acid residues thatcan be in each α-helixes for them to be long enough to span the bilayer?
The integral membrane protein XYZR has a single alpha helix spanning the membrane. Where was this protein made and what can you say about amino acids that occur/do not occur in the alpha helix versus the domains sticking out on both sides of the membrane?
