Concept explainers
EVOLUTION CONNECTION This chapter explains how the emergent properties of water contribute to the suitability of the environment for life. Until fairly recently, scientists assumed that other physical requirements for life included a moderate range of temperature, pH, atmospheric pressure, and salinity, as well as low levels of toxic chemicals. That view has changed with the discovery of organisms known as extremophiles, which have been found flourishing in hot, acidic sulfur springs, around hydrothermal vents deep in the ocean, and in soils with high levels of toxic metals. Why would astrobiologists be interested in studying extremophiles? What does the existence of life in such extreme environments say about the possibility of life on other planets?

- As water cools below 4°C, it expands and becomes less dense. Why is this beneficial to organisms living in a lake during a cold winter?arrow_forwardList and briefly describe the four functions that water performs in living organismsarrow_forwardDDT is a persistent environmental pollutant once widely used as an insecticide. Using solubility principles, explain why shore birds that populate areas sprayed with DDT are found to have a high concentration of DDT in their tissues.arrow_forward
- Discuss the biological significance of water to living organisms.arrow_forwardjustify the dependence of life on the sun and the interdependence of living things and their chemistry. People who do not understand the relationships between biological processes on the planet may roll their eyes at the statement, "Life on this planet is a delicate balance." What evidence have you found in this course so far to support this statement? Consider: The relationship between the sun, autotrophs, and heterotrophs. Give examples of how the relationship between each group. The relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Explain the chemical reactants and products of one to the other. The relationship between oxidation and reduction reactions. Define and provide an example of each. The production and consumption of ATP during photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Be detailed in where ATP is made, and where it may be used both in photosynthesis and cellular respiration.arrow_forwardAside from hydration, pick two ways water's extraordinary properties affect living organisms. The cooling that occurs through evaporation of water helps to maintain an organism's body temperature. The only way that water affects living organisms is through hydration. The cooling that occurs through condensation of water helps to maintain an organism's body temperature. Cohesion allows for water to be drawn up a plant within its vascular tissue.arrow_forward
- As surface water in a lake cools from 4 °C to 0 °C, the water expands and becomes less dense. Why is this change in the water beneficial to the organisms living in the lake? As the water cools to freezing, spaces form between water molecules, providing microhabitats for small organisms. Less dense water holds more dissolved compounds, keeping water from freezing so organisms survive winter. O Cooler water is less viscous than warmer water, making it easier for organisms to move through the water. O Frozen surface water insulates the water below it, maintaining a habitat where organisms can overwinter.arrow_forwardhich causes most of the substances in petroleum to change from a liquid state to a gas state. 2020 Green Ninja 1 Name Class Date Any remaining liquid is collected at the bottom of the column. As the gases move up the column, the temperature decreases, causing the gases to into liquids. The different liquids are separated out at each level. Large, heavy components, such as asphalt, have high boiling points and separate out at °C. Kerosene is a medium-sized component and separates out at °C. Propane is a small component with a low boiling point and separates out at °C. The Story: Write a story about three hydrocarbons: a very small hydrocarbon called propane, a medium-sized hydrocarbon called kerosene, and a very large hydrocarbon called asphalt.
