How is the beam focus changed in the EB welding process?

To determine

The least amount of vacuum that a part must be subjected in order to make an EB weld.

Explanation

EB weld stands for electron beam weld. The weld that is produced during the electron beam welding is known as EB weld.

The electron beam welding is a fusion welding process that consist a cathode, an anode, a filament and a focusing coil. A beam of high velocity electron that comes from the cathode is applied to the material that has to be joined. Here, the kinetic energy of the electron beam is converted into the heat energy and the joining is performed.

But actually the electron beam emitted from cathode has low speed. To provide high speed to this beam, a strong electric field is applied between the anode and cathode. After leaving the anode, this diverged beam is focused by a magnetic field. The magnetic field that is used here to focus the beam is produced by the electric field.

So by changing (increasing) the beam current and voltage, beam focus in the electron beam welding can be changed.

The electron beam welding is generally performed in the vacuum. The reason of performing the vacuum is to reduce dissipation of electron beam...
