Concept explainers
To determine: The name of two groups of protists which are known to cause HABs in marine ecosystems.
Introduction: Protists are single-celled eukaryotic organisms consisting of protozoa, unicellular algae, and slime molds. Marine ecosystems such as salt marshes, intertidal zones, estuaries, lagoons, mangroves, and coral reefs consist of a rich source of nutrients and salt which is required for the growth of microorganisms.
To determine: The hazards posed by HABs for other marine organisms and humans.

- Why are red algae red? What distinguishes plasmodial and cellular slime molds? What are the ecological roles of protists? Why are photosynthetic protists so important to marine/aquatic ecosystems? What limits the growth of these organisms and what causes blooms? What will be affected if marine producers are disrupted?arrow_forwardwrite an article on Cryptosporidium a pathogenic eukaryote parasite. What is the natural habitat for this organism? (water, soil, humans, plants, etc.) What clinical significance does this organism have for humans? (What disease/infections does it cause in humans?) What is the mode of transmission to humans? (How do you get an infection with this organism?) What is the worldwide geographic distribution for this organism? (Where is it found, where have there been reported cases or outbreaks lately?)arrow_forwardWhy would you be surprised to find the exact same microbial symbionts inhabiting squid and the rumen of a cow? Consider both the physical and chemical conditions of the habitat and the requirements for the symbiosis to be successful.arrow_forward
- Why have molecular biologists sequenced the genomes of severalparasitic protists?arrow_forwardProtists are a group of eukaryotic organisms that are brought together by scientists mostly by convenience. I) What is the relationship between all protists that ties them together? ii) provide an example of a autotrophic and heterotrophic protists group, iii) what is the relationship between the multicellular eukaryotes and the protists?arrow_forwardConsidering both habitat conditions and requirements for successful symbiosis, why should you be surprised that squid and the rumen of a cow have the exact same microbial symbiots?arrow_forward
- what are distinguishes plasmodia and cellular slime molds? What are the ecological roles of protists? Why Are photosynthetic protists so important to marine and aquatic ecosystems? what limits the growth of these organisms and what causes blooms> What will be affected of marine produces are disrupted?arrow_forwardCompare the mechanisms by which most eukaryotic cells acquire nutrients with those used by bacteria and archaea. What are the implications in terms of survival in different habitats and competition between eukaryotic microbes such as protists and bacteria and archaea?arrow_forwardWhat are the differences between direct and indirect life cycles? Give two (2) representative parasitic helminths species in aquaculture for each life cycle. Why is there a need to study the parasite life cycle?arrow_forward
- 59) Which of these are actual mutualistic partnerships that involve a protist and a host organism? A) cellulose-digesting gut protists : wood-eating termites B) dinoflagellates : reef-building coral animals C) Trichomonas : humans D) algae : certain foraminiferans E) all except Carrow_forwardRuminants (like cattle) are herbivores but lack the necessary enzymes to digest cellulose from plants. Part of the digestive tract of ruminants contains a microbial community that can break down cellulose. These microbes gain energy from the plant material, and byproducts of their metabolism provide the host with a source of Carbon and energy. What type of symbiosis does this relationship describe?arrow_forwardWhat two microbes form a partnership in the lichen symbiosis? What are the benefits to both partners?arrow_forward
